Rigi Sunrise 24.12.2007 - Report

A sight along our path revealed only by the flashlight

On the 24 of December 2007, we decided to walk up the Rigi to see the sunrise.
The Rigi is a mountain in central Switzerland between Schwyz and Lucerne. There are a lot of possibilities to get up there, including cable cars or rack railways. Unfortunately none of them is operational that early in the morning, so we had to go by foot, not that we really cared, but it was a little cold that day :)

That day was really great, weather forecast predicted mist up to 900 metres a.s. and full moon for that night. This combination, and the snow, enabled us to find our path easliy without using any additional lights. With this ambiance, it turned out to be a very special hiking trip.

After several minutes of standing around on the top of Rigi Kulm, the sun finally revealed itself... what a sight!

We did not take the full height of the Rigi, we went halfway up by car to the Seebodenalp and started from there. Even from the Seebodenalp there are many different ways and trails to get on the top.
Even though one has to get up very early, and to be outside at several degrees below zero, it is definitely worth the exertion.
